Healio: High nocturnal cough rate, worse asthma symptoms linked in severe uncontrolled asthma

Albus Health recently featured in Healio’s coverage of new ERS 2026 data showing that higher nocturnal cough rates are linked to worsening asthma symptoms in adults with severe, uncontrolled disease.

In a year‑long pilot study from Leiden University Medical Center, patients using the Albus Home contactless bedside device showed exceptionally high adherence, enabling researchers to capture continuous, clinical‑grade nighttime data. A five-fold rise in nocturnal cough was associated with significantly higher odds of worse asthma symptoms for up to three days afterwards — offering an objective signal of deteriorating control that traditional tools often miss.

The study underscores the limitations of intermittent assessments and patient‑reported diaries, and highlights how passive, burden‑free monitoring can reveal day‑to‑day changes in disease activity. Researchers also noted substantial variation between patients, pointing to future opportunities to identify who benefits most from nocturnal cough tracking and how combining cough with other physiological signals could deepen clinical insight.

As Albus advances its next‑generation platform — now capturing heart rate, sleep patterns, inhalation/exhalation duration and environmental factors — these findings reinforce the potential of continuous, contactless monitoring to transform how severe asthma is understood and managed.
